The Town of Churubusco is currently accepting applications for a full-time, non-exempt Utility Assistant, primarily employed within the wastewater department. Incumbent serves as Utility Assistant for the Churubusco Wastewater Plant and is responsible for monitoring treatment process systems to ensure efficient plant operations. The incumbent will be responsible for performing non-journeyman tasks in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer line system. The work is performed under immediate supervision of the Wastewater Plant Supervisor. The job description and duties therein are not exhaustive and the incumbent will be expected to perform related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Performs maintenance work, under direction of immediate supervisor, involving repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment in the wastewater plant. Determines location and cause of malfunctions and initiates required adjustments or repairs. Installs portable pumps to empty tanks for repairs as needed;
2. Performs necessary work in flushing and clearing sewer lines and manholes;
3. Performs regular inspections of treatment plant, checking for cleanliness, proper operation of pumps, samplers, other WWTP related equipment, and maintenance.
4. Performs routine maintenance work in wastewater treatment plant such as oiling, greasing and cleaning of equipment;
5. Responsible for vehicular operation of sludge disposal truck and other Town vehicles and equipment;
6. Required to remove snow and ice; mow, rake and general clean up of the ground and other Town properties;
7. Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer lines;
8. Extracts samples, delivers samples to lab, and performs routine laboratory tests and analysis, and interprets meter/gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good mechanical aptitude; good observation; ability to learn principles and procedures relating to operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plan and sewer lines; ability to develop skills in the operation and maintenance of equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of relevant work experience NOTE: No Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License required, but must have the ability to obtain an Operator’s License.
TYPICAL SCHEDULE: The typical schedule is Monday-Friday 7 am-3 pm. However, the employee will be required to work on-call shifts and respond to emergency situations which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess at time of appointment and maintain a valid driver’s license; must pass a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check.
