JOB OPENING- FULL-TIME UTILITY ASSISTANT

The Town of Churubusco is currently accepting applications for a full-time utility assistant position. This position will be under the direction of the Street and Water Supervisor and employed within the Churubusco Utility Department. POSITION: Utility Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Street & Water Departments
WORK SCHEDULE: varies; typically 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. M-F
STATUS: Full-time, non-exempt

Reports to the Street & Water Superintendent or Wastewater Superintendent.

Supervision Exercised:
None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintains cleanliness and appearance of Town owned grounds, buildings, and right-of-ways, including picking up litter, emptying trash containers, cleaning/sanitizing restrooms & meeting facilities, mowing/trimming grass, spraying pesticides, pruning trees and shrubs, removing fallen tree limbs, shoveling/sweeping/blowing snow, spreading salt on walkways, pulling weeds, and watering plants.
• Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of a water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution system, and sewer lines;
• Assists in reading water meters and troubleshooting issues related to meter readings
• Assists in repairing and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and alleys
• Demolition and replacement of sidewalks, alleys, and roads.
• Assists in maintaining buildings/facilities and related equipment, including tractor and hand tools.
• Assists in performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on department equipment, such as mowers, tractors, including washing/waxing/cleaning vehicles, checking/maintaining fluid levels, changing tires, replacing parts, sharpening blades, and lubricating.
• Assists in maintaining buildings/facilities and related equipment, including painting/patching walls, caulking windows, unclogging toilets, changing light bulbs, repairing furniture and signs, assists with hanging of seasonal lights.

Other Duties May Include:
• Flushing and clearing of hydrants, water lines, sewer lines and manholes;
• Communicating with residents concerning utility usage and/or repair and maintenance schedules
• Performing inspections of treatment plants- checking for cleanliness, proper operation of pumps, samplers, other water and wastewater related equipment, and maintenance.
• Performs routine maintenance work in water and wastewater treatments plant such as oiling, greasing and cleaning of equipment;
• Decorating Town facilities and streets for special events and holidays
• Traffic control during road closings
• Vehicular operation of sludge disposal truck and other Town vehicles and equipment;
• Extracting samples, sample delivery, performing laboratory tests and analysis, and interpreting meter/gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements;
• Other duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Job Requirements:
High school diploma or GED preferred. Education and/or experience in building, grounds and/or equipment maintenance preferred.

Working knowledge of OSHA policies and procedures, and ability to properly operate various hand and power tools, such as hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, power saws, grinder, and sander.

Working knowledge of grounds maintenance and ability to properly operate various related tools and equipment, such as post hole digger, pruner, shovel, rake, brush chipper, bush hog, riding and power mowers, hedge trimmers, grader, chain saw, and tractor.

Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, standing/walking for long periods, sitting for long periods, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/ grasping /fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, close and far vision.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and work with others in a team environment.

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and citizens, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to occasionally work extended, evening and/or weekend hours as needed.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Responsibility:
Incumbent can perform anything from simple, repetitive tasks such as mowing and snow removal to moderately complex tasks such as repairing and replacing utility lines. A moderate degree of care and skill are required to protect tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.

Physical Effort:
Incumbent’s duties involve bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, sitting and/or standing/walking for long periods, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, close and far vision. Incumbent may exert continuous physical effort, but normal duties do not involve prolonged intense physical strain.

License/Certification Required:
Possession of a current valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record with ability to be insured at a reasonable cost required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, background check, and adhere to policy.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent performs duties indoors and outdoors involving occasional work on ladders and frequent exposure to dust, dirt, grease, fumes, adverse weather conditions, noise, extreme outdoor temperatures, cleaning chemicals, bio-hazardous waste, power tools and heavy machinery, for which safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
